RIGHTS
• Join PPL and PRS.
• Log all your recordings and songs.
• Keep a record of your rights data (ISRC, ISWC).
• Pick the right distributor – get the most out of them.
• Consider a rights administrator – eg Sentric, Songtrust.
• Properly plan a campaign around each release.
• Think about the content that accompanies the release.


LIVE
• Plot out your show – or shows.
• Look for lots of opportunities to play live.
• Including support and guest spots.
• Consider collaborations on shows.
• Document your shows and share it online.
• Have a good pitch for your show.
• Network whenever and wherever you play.


FANBASE BUILDING
• How can you grow your fanbase?
• Use live and digital activity to reach and engage fans.
• Use collaborations to grow your reach.
• Use your data to inform what you do – what works?
• Use release campaigns to accelerate fanbase growth.
• How can you start to monetise the fan relationship?
• Remember to grow your industry network.


CONNECTING WITH THE INDUSTRY
• Attend music industry events.
• Research people who are speaking before the event.
• Ask lots of questions.
• Work out who is working with the artists who inspire you.
• When you contact people – demonstrate you’re targeting.
• Ask for advice rather than “will you sign me”.
• Learn about the workings and evolution of the business.
